Violin and Viola Teacher, Sussex

Grazyna Zarebska-Squier

I have taught in a number of independent schools and specialist music departments for nearly thirty years. Teaching violin and viola to individual pupils continues to be my specialist activity. In addition to this, I have had responsibilities as a Chamber Music Co-ordinator, Ensemble and Orchestra coach/assistant. My strength as an instrumental teacher lies in my ability to pull a team of players together to create a satisfying, high quality performance.

The majority of my pupils and ensembles achieve a high standard of playing on amateur and professional levels, gaining distinctions and merits in their exams. One of my youngest pupils reached the semi-finals of the BBC Young Musician of the Year 2000.

Being an enthusiastic and passionate teacher, I use a highly constructive approach based on the Eastern European traditions of music education with those young people who aspire to become future professionals. At the same time, I instil the love and appreciation of music in keen amateurs of all ages.

Biography

Grazyna Zarebska-Squier

I graduated from the Academy of Music in Lodz, Poland, with a Master’s Degree in Performance and a Teaching Diploma. I furthered my studies on my principal instrument, the Viola, during the International Masterclasses in Lancut with Fiodor Druzhynin (Moscow Conservatoire). I also participated in the Teacher Training courses with Lew Raaben, Zachar Bron (Russia), Robert Masters (UK) and Eberhard Feltz (Germany).

While in Poland, I performed as a soloist and member of the chamber orchestra 'Pro Musica', followed by full-time posts with the Polish Radio & Television Orchestra and Arthur Rubinstein Lodz Philharmonic.

In 1984, I joined the Classical Trio from Warsaw as a violinist and we toured for many years in Europe, the Middle and the Far East. During one of our concert tours, I accepted a full-time post as a violin and piano tutor in the Higher Institute of Musical Arts in Kuwait. Later, with the approval of the Dean, I opened the Viola class there.

In 1990, following the tragic Iraqi invasion of Kuwait and after losing all my belongings including a precious violin, I moved to the United Kingdom. I built up a successful private teaching practice in Birmingham and in 1994 I received an invitation to teach viola and take up a position of a Chamber Music co-ordinator at the Birmingham Conservatoire Junior Department. One of my youngest viola pupils went to the semi-finals of the BBC Young Musician of the Year 2000.

Living in Brighton since 1996, I continue to perform and teach. The Baroque Course with Jaap Schroder in 1998 was a lasting inspiration. I reviewed Schroder's Baroque Classes in the ESTA News and Views Publication, Winter Edition 1998. Since then, I have been exploring the beauty of playing Baroque music with several period ensembles including The Sussex Baroque Players and The Consort of Twelve.
